JANUARY 2004

Well January has been and gone, the end of the month saw Callum weighing in at 12lbs 9oz, and his length measured 61cms (just over 2 feet).  His weight gain may seem small, but that’s because he lost his appetite for a few days at the beginning of the month because he got a cold following his first set of vaccinations which were done on 29th December.

Poor kid, he got over that cold, and then caught another one just in time for his 2nd vaccination which was on 29th January.  He caught that one off me though – I’d had mastitis, which, in its progressed state gives you flu like symptoms, plus I think I was heading for a cold anyway.  It was unfortunately odds on that I would pass it on to him.  So, his appetite dropped for a few more days towards the end of the month.

So, with both of us feeling rather poorly, Shaun was an absolute angel as ever.  Despite holding down a full time job, plus overtime, he took care of us both and the house as I had been told to have bed rest.

Also, I don’t know what I would have done without the support I got (as usual!) from my Mum & Dad… they looked after Callum several times so that I could have a rest and attend doctors appointments etc.  If there’s one thing that I wish for Callum it’s that he gets from us the same kind of unconditional love and support that Shaun and I receive from my parents.  I could not imagine better role models.

Callum is still making steady progress though, and in his self he is fine.  He was always still trying to smile, even through the streaming eyes and running nose.  Bless him.

I still can’t believe that we have got him.  I still look at him and say to Shaun “Awww he’s lovely, can we keep him?” (Something I’ve always said when I’ve seen cute little animals, or other peoples kids).  I just can’t believe that he’s ours forever and that we don’t have to give this one back.

Quite a bit of this month has been taken up by making plans for the Naming Ceremony which we are planning to hold in March.  We have decided to have a Naming Ceremony rather than a Christening because Shaun and myself are both of different religions and neither of us are practicing – so we don’t feel it is appropriate for us to choose a ‘religious label’ for him.  It would be hypocritical to have a religious service just out of tradition rather than faith.  We believe that Callum should choose his own path when he is older.  We will try to help answer his questions and support his education in this area the best we can – but we will not dictate to him what he should be.

So, with a Christening out of the question, we decided that a Naming Ceremony should be held as we did not want his arrival to go unmarked… after all; it took us so long to get him!

It should be a good ‘do’.  Over 130 invites have gone out (and that was the short list!!).  We know that not everyone will be able to make it due to other commitments, but still, it should still be a good sized party.

Callum seems to be showing an increased interest in the TV these days.  Playhouse Disney seems to hold a particular attraction, probably due to all the bright colours on their shows.  I can’t believe that he already dictates what we watch… but at least on a morning I can get a cuppa now while he’s laid on his change mat being babysat by ‘The Bear in the Big Blue House’ or ‘Rolie Polie Ollie’!!

Well, I’m sure that there’s much more that I wanted to say about January, but I’d better leave it at this for now.  We have been doing quite well these last few days at getting Callum to go to bed at around 10.30pm, we are hoping it’s going to be his new routine.  So I’d better go give him his night-night feed.

Bye for now, Amanda.
