MAY 2004
Well, better late than never… here’s the diary for May. May was the month I have been dreading for so long – it was the month I was due to return to work. Although I had reduced my hours considerably and was just planning to return 3 days per week, I still found the prospect rather daunting. I can’t even say that my reservations were purely Maternal – I just didn’t want to go back. It’s just not the same place anymore… I’m not the only one who feels that they are no longer valued, appreciated or motivated. It’s a shame… I used to love my job and was often accused of being a ‘workaholic’. In practice, leaving Callum wasn’t as hard as I though it would be. It was still difficult, but we both seemed to settle into the new routine quite quickly. My Mum & Dad are looking after Callum on the days I am at work, in fact, my Dad even comes to collect him to save me having to rush around on a morning. Callum is really settled with my folks and they love him to bits, so all in all we have no problems. I just wish I could find the words to express our gratitude to my parents for everything they do. Hopefully Callum thanks them enough for us by the way his little face lights up when he sees them. The night before I returned to work, Callum surprised me by sleeping straight through – in fact I had to go wake him up! He must have known how important it was for me to get a good night’s rest. He doesn’t sleep through every night, but he wakes up far fewer times than before (during May at least – at the time of writing it’s a whole different story!). Towards the end of the month we started Callum on ‘lumpier’ food – he took to it really well. His first lumpy meal was pasta bolognaise and was given to him by his ‘Auntie’ Dawny sat in her new conservatory – it’s a good job she hadn’t had the new floor covering put down yet, he made quite a mess… but he seemed to enjoy it! We got Callum weighed on 2nd June, he had gone up to 18lbs 1oz, and his length measured 69 cm. Callum really does seem to be developing well. Despite not crawling yet, he is always moving… waving his hands and feet about all the time. His ‘speech’ is coming on too; we are hearing more and more different sounds as the weeks go by. Still no teeth though! Despite seeming to be teething forever, with the inevitable side effects, none of them have finally managed to break through the gum properly. Poor kid, they all get to the surface and then pause… his gums are getting very lumpy and you can see where there is pressure under the surface… but they just haven’t made it through yet. We are not sure whether Callum will be a crawler, for a while we thought he may be a bottom-shuffler instead, but now we don’t think he will do either – he always wants you to hold him on his feet, so perhaps he will be a baby who just waits until he masters walking. Time will tell I suppose. I have amended the diary for April, as I never mentioned how he had mastered the skill of sitting unaided… he just loves sitting on the floor playing with his toys independently. We have been so busy, this diary entry is rather late, I do apologise to everyone for keeping them waiting. I may not get time to add any new photo’s this month, so I may have to do it when I make the updates for June – I’m sure you all understand how it is! Well better go… if I have missed anything out for May, I will add it when I remember. I will try not to be so late next time! See ya!, Amanda
