MAY 2006

Well, May was the month of Callum’s first holiday abroad.  We chose Majorca so that the flight would not be too long for him, and we went out of high season so that it would not be too hot for him either.

We were a tad worried about how well he would cope with all the travelling, but we needn’t have been – he was fine.  He loved flying, when we were taking off we patted our knees to raise more power and then threw our arms into the air shouting “blast off”… just like they do to launch Rocket on Little Einstein’s.  Callum only experienced landing once because on the way there he fell asleep and never even remembered getting off the plane.

The other thing we had worried about was how Callum would eat… but there were plenty of places for him to eat, there were more English places than anything else!  Perhaps a tad too English in some respects if it had just been me and Shaun, but travelling with a young child it made it ideal.

We all had a great time.  Most days were spent at either the pool or the beach.  For the first few evenings we did not go into the hotel bar… but when we were walking past one night, Callum went in and showed a lot of interest in what the other kids were up to.  From then on we went in every night.  Callum was quiet the exhibitionist, he kept going onto the stage… dancing and fooling around.

He made lots of friends; two in particular were Melissa and Jordan (who are brother and sister).  Although they were much older, Callum bonded with them really well, and they were great with him – if you are reading this guys, we hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday… get in touch using the ‘Contact Us’ page.

Callum joined in the ‘mini disco’ with the other kids and joined in a few of the games… had he been a year or two older; there would have been loads for him to do night and day.

We had only booked a week as we weren’t sure how it would go… I wished we had booked for longer in the end because it was great.  There were no struggles with travel or eating.  We were all so very relaxed.  Although we always enjoy our times away with our extended family, it was nice for it to just be the three of us.

So, holiday aside, what else happened in May?  Ah yes, another trip to see Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends… this time at Embsay near Bolton Abbey.  It was a lovely day, and the train trips were longer than at York, but overall, I think I prefer the York event.  Still it was nice… even if the weather did suddenly change from hot sunshine to hailstone and then back to hot sunshine again in the space of about 10 minutes!!

Callum’s ongoing breathing/coughing problems continued through May.  Although he was ok during our holidays, within a couple of days of coming home he was taken to A&E twice on the same day.  To cut a long story short, we had many hospital/GP visits, eventually finding out that he did indeed have an infection… in his throat this time.  Some antibiotics eventually took care of it though.

As May ends, we are starting to potty train Callum.  He hasn’t particularly shown many signs of being ready, but we thought we would give it a go – we can always try again later on if things don’t go well.  Although so far he seems to have the hang of it and it has only been 2 days.

Well, I’ll let you know how it’s going next month.

See ya,

Amanda xXx
